The Beauty of Order
In traditional Chinese imperial gardens, such as the Forbidden City, and in French gardens like Versailles, the aesthetic of symmetry along a central axis is brought to perfection. The completely symmetrical architectural layout of this project site offers the potential to extend this beauty of order into the garden design. The main space in the backyard spans 90 feet from north to south and 60 feet from east to west. In Chinese culture, the numbers nine and six symbolize longevity and good fortune. The designer aims to directly reflect these auspicious dimensions in the garden design.
The approach involves dividing the 90 by 60-foot space using bands of square bricks, making the dimensions of nine and six visibly readable within the space. At the same time, the functional needs of the client are thoughtfully arranged within the divided spaces. The choice of plant materials further reinforces the theme of longevity and good fortune, with species such as ginkgo (symbolizing longevity), magnolia (symbolizing good fortune), red maple (symbolizing passion), and azalea (symbolizing love).
